GROUP HOMES
Group homes were established to provide community based residential
alternatives for individuals with developmental disabilities in order to
develop and maintain independent living skills. Prior to the DDSD support
that began in 1982, these homes were funded with only resident contributions
and private donations, limiting their scope of service delivery. Realizing
the need for residential options in the community, the DDSD began funding
private, non-profit organizations to sponsor group homes.
Services are provided in a structured environment with staff supervision.
The staff provide structured activities and supports necessary to meet the
needs of individuals based upon the determination of the interdisciplinary
team.
These services are developed in accordance with the needs of the individual
including: Provision for specialized training. Program supervision that
meets scheduled or unpredictable needs in a way that promotes maximum
dignity and independence, while providing for supervision, safety, and
security.
To be eligible for this type of group home, individuals must receive
services through the Home and Community Based Waiver (or occupy a state
funded slot), be community waiver recipients, 18 years of age or older, have
a diagnosis of mental retardation, IQ of 70 or less, require close
supervision and frequent assistance from staff.
Homes meet the licensing requirements set forth by DDSD.
