  1. What is Gatesway?

The Gatesway Foundation is a non-profit Oklahoma agency that provides a wide range of residential and vocational options for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Services are provided throughout Eastern and Central Oklahoma.

  2. Why was Gatesway started?

Gatesway was founded in 1963 by Helen Gates to provide alternatives for persons with developmental disabilities such as her son, Ronnie, who was born with Down syndrome.

  3. Who does Gatesway serve?

Gatesway serves approximately 500 children and adults annually who are developmentally disabled or have brainstem damage. To date, Gatesway has touched thousands of individuals and their families.

  4. What are developmental disabilities?

The term "developmental disability" (DD) is a legal definition mandated by Congress in 1970. Legislation originally grouped certain diagnostic categories: mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and autism. These diagnoses encompass over 3/4 of the seriously disabled adults who acquired their handicaps before the age of 21 years of age. Congress wanted "to ensure the planning, coordination and delivery of services to persons with developmental disabilities and to secure and protect their legal and human rights."

  5. Where is Gatesway?

Gatesway provides services throughout Eastern and Central Oklahoma; Corporate Offices are in Broken Arrow, OK; Gatesway West is a branch of Gatesway centered in Stillwater, OK.

  6. What types of programs and services does Gatesway offer?

Gatesway offers a wide array of residential and vocational programs, both inside and outside the home, to adults with developmental disabilities.

  7. Why are these programs important?

Gatesway provides the individualized programming necessary to help the people we serve become independent by encouraging each person to exceed their goals. We do this by offering each person an opportunity to live, work and socialize within the least restrictive environment possible and with caring and supportive staff.

  8. Is Gatesway a United Way agency?

    No

  9. Where does Gatesway get its funding?

Gatesway is funded through donations from businesses and interested individuals, private grants, state and federal grants, fees charged to the individuals we serve, and state and federal funding (Medicaid, Medicare and Supplemental Security Income).
